Meaning of Truck

Before entering fully into the meaning of the term truck, it is necessary to proceed to know the etymological origin of it. In this case, we can establish that it derives from the French, from the Gallic word “truck” which can be translated as “car”.

The term truck allows to name a vehicle with a motor that has at least four wheels and that is used for the transfer of very heavy loads. Typically, trucks are used to transport goods.

Most trucks have a cabin where the driver and his passenger travels and a large chassis equipped with some type of structure to transport the load. Many times, on the rear axle, they have double sets of wheels.

There are multiple types of trucks, whose characteristics vary according to their load. The simplest trucks have a kind of box where the objects they transport are stored. Others have a refrigerated box specially designed for the transfer of goods that require cold, such as meat and other foods.

There are trucks with cages to transport live animals; with dump trucks to “dump” the load; with mixing machines (concrete mixers) to prepare concrete (also called concrete); with tanks to transport liquids; with compacting devices for garbage; and with cranes, among many others.

Many are the classifications that exist in terms of trucks. However, one of the most used is the one based on the weight of the vehicle in question. Starting from this aspect, there are the following types:
-Light, weighing between 500 kilos and 2.5 tons.
-Lightweight, weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 tons.
-Semilivianos, which are between 3.5 and 4.5 tons.
-Mediums, weighing between 4.5 and 5.5 tons.
-Semi-heavy, whose weight is between 5.5 and 7.5 tons.
-Heavy, which weigh between 7.5 and 9 tons.
-Extra-heavy, weighing between 9 and 11.5 tons.

However, there are also the mega-heavy, ultra-heavy and giga-heavy.

Trucks are generally powered by an internal combustion engine, powered by gasoline or other fuel. However, there are also electric trucks: their engines, which do not generate pollution, have the ability to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy.

As part of racing and sporting events, in some countries they develop truck races where these large vehicles competing in different circuits.

In the same way, we cannot ignore the existence of an important song in Spain that uses the word at hand in its title. We are referring to “I want a truck”, which was a great success in the 80’s and is already an essential “classic” of the country’s music.

The rock group Loquillo y los Trogloditas was the one that interpreted this song that appeared, for the first time, in 1983 within the album “El Rhythm of the Garage” and that later, in 1989, was released as a single.
