Litchfield County is located in northwestern Connecticut and has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Mahican Native American tribe before it was settled by English colonists in 1639. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the area was part of Hartford County until it became its own county in 1751.
In the early 19th century, Litchfield County experienced a period of growth thanks to an influx of new residents from New England and New York. As a result, several towns were incorporated including Canaan, Cornwall, Goshen, Kent, Morris, New Milford, Salisbury and Warren.
During the Civil War era, many residents of Litchfield County fought for the Union Army as well as for various militia units such as the 22nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After the war ended in 1865, many former soldiers returned home to rebuild their lives in Litchfield County.
In the early 20th century, Litchfield County experienced another period of growth with many new businesses opening up throughout the county. This included several banks and manufacturing companies which helped to create jobs for local residents and boost economic activity in Litchfield County.
