Glenn County, California has a long and varied history. It was originally part of Colusa County, which was established in 1850 when California became a state. In 1891, the county was divided into two parts; the northern part became Glenn County and the southern part remained Colusa County. The new county was named after Dr. Hugh J. Glenn, who served as a state senator from 1858-1862 and owned a large ranch in what is now Willows, California.
The first settlers of Glenn County came to the area in the mid-1850s and began to establish small farming communities. By 1870, there were already over 2,000 people living in the county with most of them being farmers or ranchers. As more settlers arrived in the area, towns began to spring up such as Willows in 1872 and Orland in 1876.
In addition to farming and ranching, timber harvesting was also an important industry in Glenn County during this time period as well as mining for gold and other minerals near Stony Gorge Reservoir.
