History of Collier County, Florida
Collier County, Florida is located in the southwestern part of the state and was established in 1923. It is named after Barron Collier who was an entrepreneur and philanthropist from New York City. Collier helped to develop a lot of areas in Southwest Florida including Marco Island, Naples, Everglades City, Immokalee, and Golden Gate.
The first people to settle in Collier County were the Calusa Indians around 500 BC. Later on, Spanish explorers arrived in the area during the 1500s and 1600s but no permanent settlements were established at that time. In 1776, British settlers arrived in Naples and began to establish farms and ranches throughout the area.
In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States and settlers continued to arrive throughout Collier County. The first post office was established in 1883 followed by a railroad line connecting Naples to Fort Myers which was completed in 1926. After World War II ended, many veterans moved to Collier County as part of a federal program which provided them with land grants.
In 1956 Barron Collier passed away leaving behind his legacy of developing Southwest Florida. In 1960 Marco Island was incorporated as a city followed by Everglades City in 1961 and Immokalee in 1962. In 1965 Naples officially became a city with its own government following a charter election that same year.
