History of Buchanan County, Missouri
Buchanan County is located in Northwest Missouri and was established in 1839. It was named after James Buchanan, the fifteenth president of the United States. The county seat is St. Joseph, which was founded in 1843 and has since become a major regional center for commerce and industry.
Before European settlers arrived, the area now known as Buchanan County was inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Osage, Kickapoo, and Shawnee. In 1808, Lewis & Clark passed through on their famous expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory. Following this exploration, a series of treaties were made with the Native Americans that eventually allowed for white settlement in the area.
By the 1840s, Buchanan County had become an important agricultural center with many settlers coming from other parts of Missouri as well as from other states such as Kentucky and Tennessee. The county’s first railroad line opened in 1859 connecting St Joseph to Kansas City which helped to stimulate further growth in both cities and throughout Buchanan County as well.
During the Civil War, much of Buchanan County aligned itself with the Union; however there were also a number of Confederate supporters living in the area at this time as well. A number of battles were fought within its borders during this period including one at Savannah where Confederate forces were defeated by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant’s command.
